Slow Yoga Flow

Take a moment with your little one, find peace, unwind and bond with our Yoga flow. This sequence has been specially tailored by new mum & yoga instructor Emma Isokivi, together with Heather Burns Yoga to create a slow yoga flow made especially with parents & new mothers in mind.

Yoga can be a great way to relax and gently exercise while bonding with your little one. We spoke to our model & photographer Maria and yoga instructor Emma about their experiences of practicing with their little ones.

Maria says:

“When you become a mother, the world seems to spin faster and sometimes everything seems to be too much and somehow blurry. Yoga can help to slow down again, to breathe, to keep your thoughts together in this crazy circus, called life.”

Emma says:

“My yoga practice now all about supporting my family; my little one, myself and husband. Sometimes he crawls around between my legs, and when he was much smaller he often was in my arms or in a sling during most of my day- whether it be on my mat or walking around. It’s a special time to be connected to your child, wrapped in with you. And a yoga practice is so much more than just postures- it’s a whole life philosophy.”

Diaries of a Glam Mama: 6 Fancy Finishes

One of the things I love most about wrapping my babies is experimenting with different carries and finishes. There are SO MANY fancy finishes out there for every carry and wrap size – just a quick YouTube search will get you dozens of tutorials!

Read more over at Diary of a Glam Mama

For those just starting out – or are just in need of quick, easy finishes  – then check out these 6 easy fancy finishes for double hammock carries featuring Oscha Slings’ Rei Electric Dreams!

My criteria for choosing these finishes are that they must:

  • Look complicated and pretty (obviously this is quite subjective)
  • Be able to get done quickly (with less that 3 steps for the finish before tying off – the basic Double Hammock steps are excluded from this, of course
  • Be easy to master (you should be able to do these without watching a video after doing them a couple of times)

Three of these (Freshwater, Saltwater, and Candy Cane Chest Belt) I do very often, but the other three (Sweetheart, Poppin’s, and Pond) I only tried for the first time for the purpose of this post. The fact they look so good in these photos is proof of how easy they are to do!

Staying Cool with Wool

Wool is a great yarn for warmer weather! Seems strange, but it is true … the temperature regulating qualities of wool make it a good choice for keeping cool in warmer weather. Our model, Yun tells us how, even in the heat of a Hawaiian summer, wool can be an amazing choice.

Andaluz Neshika Baby Wrap:
40% organic combed cotton, 17% organic linen, 23% wool, 9% silk, 11% linen.

“I love wool!!  I had been resistant to even trying it since our temperate weather never gets colder than 60º F (16ºC) and gets up to the 90s (over 32ºC) at times, but man was I missing out! Then I used Roses Nova for Jaxon’s newborn phase and loved it even though we were experiencing one of the warmest summers in history here in Hawaii. There’s really something special about a wrap that just conforms to your body, regulates both your temperatures and well….the softness and cush, especially for a newborn.”

You can read more about the provenance of our wool yarns here.

Woollen fabrics have built-in climate control as the fibers are nonconductors of heat allowing the body to properly regulate its temperature. The scales on the surface of the fiber and its natural crimp make for little pockets of air that serve as an insulating barrier and give warmth. Amazingly, lightweight wool can also work for summer wear because of its thermostatic quality. Wool is, therefore, a natural insulator keeping us warm in winter whilst also being breathable to keep us cool in summer.

Travelling with Kids: 5 Top Tips for Airports.

With the holiday season in full swing, our minds ponder to exotic locations, there’s one place we know that carrying makes a huge difference; the airport. Your adventure is just a few hours away, but first, you’ve got to navigate the chaos of the terminal!  We asked our lovely customers in our Clan Oscha group if they had any tips and wisdom to share with us to help you arrive at your destination, cool, relaxed and ready to start your holiday!
1: Arrival

You’ve made it to the airport – you and lots of cases too. One thing everyone in the Clan agreed on is that while our luggage doesn’t tend to run off – our toddlers may – and so carrying your child not only helps to be ‘hands free’ for cases – but helps lower stress levels while you take in the airport, and figure out where to go.

Travelling with Kids: Which wrap to use in the heat?

“What are the best slings for the heat?” – This is a question we get asked all the time as the weather begins to warm up and people start to begin travelling to warmer climates than they are used to!
Comfy carrying in the summer heat comes down to three choices: type of carrier, the fabric and the type of carry you use.  Read on for our guide to choosing the right Oscha Sling for you & your little one this summer.
Choosing a carrier

Baby wraps and ring slings are popular choices for summertime carrying as they offer complete adjustability, allowing you and your little one to be comfortable together in the heat. Our Cairis Carrier is also a good option for summer carrying as the unique, lightweight design allows for natural airflow and all the comfort for a traditional woven sling.

The Middle Earth Collection: RohanTM

For this new addition to our Middle Earth Collection we travel south from the Misty Mountains to the great vale and the Kingdom of Rohan. The home of the RohirrimTM, the horse lords.

Inspiration

When considering a Rohan design, we wished to depict the culture and iconography of the Rohirrim, as described in The Lord of the Rings – A proud people with a strong monarchy, known for their skilled cavalry and horse training.

“I have been among them,” [said] Aragorn. “They are proud and wilful, but they are true-hearted, generous in thought and deed.”

The design took inspiration from tapestries, depicting historical tales, which were said to line the halls of Meduseld (the Hall of the King of Rohan), as well as descriptions of the banner of Rohan and Théoden’s shield:

New: 100% Ice Cotton

We are excited to introduce a range of slings woven with Ice Cotton. Specially developed to give a “cool to the touch” feel, our new wraps are perfect for keeping you both fresh and comfortable in the heat, just in time for the summer months to come.
Read on for an insight into the fibres used and feedback from our trusted babywearing testers.

Ice Cotton yarn is made from naturally grown and selected cotton, with no synthetic fibers, and is free from harmful chemicals.
The beauty of this unique “cooling” material is in the advanced spinning technology which uses very long and twisted fibres, making the fabric feel fresh and light. If you look closely at the individual yarns in the weave (image below), you will see the twisted fibres which give a raised texture, this produces a construction which is naturally airy and breathable.

Our Ice Cotton slings have been tested by several experienced babywearers since March last year (2015), here are some of their comments:

Keely, England
Testing 100% Ice Cotton wrap
How did you get on with your Ice Cotton tester?
‘I apparently have gone absolutely crazy for your ice cotton! It is amazing! We have worn with it every day, it’s one of the most comfortable wraps I’ve owned and wraps like a dream. I was concerned by how thin and gauze-like it felt at first, but it is so surprisingly supportive and the pattern makes it nice and grippy. It’s very comfy on my shoulders and thin enough to make a lovely neat knot. My nearly 2 year old has been up for several hours at a time in it and was weightless throughout. I will be very very sad to part with it!’

That’s great to hear! How would you feel about using it against bare skin and with a younger baby?
‘Straight out of the bag I had my doubts, but now it’s had a few washes and been well worn I think it will be fine. I’ve worn it on bare shoulders and it was lovely. I also borrowed a friend’s very dinky one month old to try with it and it was still perfect, she fell asleep in minutes and was clearly very comfortable in there!’

Julia, UK – on holiday in Thailand
Tested 100% Ice Cotton wrap
‘I was really excited to be able to test the ice cotton out in the heat of Thailand. Most days were over 32C and the humidity was still high in the region I was staying. As I reported a while back, my first try I managed a 2km walk in 35C humid heat, I was wearing two layers and Aria in one. The only place that either of us was sweating was where our bodies had been together, which is to be expected.  Even with wearing it in a DH, I didn’t feel overheated and more importantly, Aria didn’t either. In subsequent wears (I think one day it was up to 40C apart from feeling fatigue from the heat anyway), the wrap was still comfortable to wear. I also took a 50% linen (it was a thicker 50% linen – alto eventide) but I wore that once and then left it in the suitcase, the ice cotton was just more comfortable to wear. Careful tightening with this wrap is a must but despite a really bad wrap job, it felt amazing on my shoulders and fantastic in high temperatures.’

Karine, Singapore
Tested 100% Ice Cotton wrap
‘Upon receiving the wrap, it seems there isn’t a need to break it in like a typical hemp or linen blend. It is very thin and airy which makes it very cooling to wrap with. Slightly textured which creates a relatively good grip even with a half knot tie. Supportive and comfortable even after an hour of wrapping my 17 month old who weighs about 12kg. I’m looking forward to experiencing a blend of cotton and ice cotton. I will be excited to see more ice cotton wraps with colour gradients too!’
