Meet the Team: Evonne, Textile Designer

Oscha designer, Evonne, answers your questions about working at Oscha HQ, designing the woven fabrics for our gorgeous baby carriers. These questions were kindly submitted by members of Clan Oscha, our Facebook community.
How does one become an Oscha designer?

Well, I have a degree in Printed Textiles (- not weave like you may imagine!) and Laura, our design assistant, has a degree in Digital Media – so a pretty diverse mix. You need a combination of hand drawing skills, an eye for pattern, repeat making skills and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator know how.

How do you handle having such an awesome job?

I haven’t, it’s all gone to my head.

Do you work alone on the patterns or in teams?

Both, sometimes someone else will have drawn something and I’ll put it into repeat and get it ready for weave – other times I’ll work on something from start to finish on my own.

Who do you design in mind? Parents? Babies? Trends?

I do research trends at the beginning of each collection, however, I’m very selective with which trends I choose to work with. Oscha’s should be timeless, it’s not fast fashion – these wraps are worn for years and often are converted into other items or kept to pass on to the wearer’s children when they are old enough. I usually think of the sling as being an accessory for the wearer.

Sketchbook: Prism Collection

Inspired by the rainbow colours of refracted light, this Collection embraces the vibrant tones of springtime with brilliant, colour-filled baby wraps

Featuring our new Prism warp this Collection brings us out of the dark winter months, into the fun and colour of springtime. The bright spectrum of colours, which emerge from prisms as white light turns into a wild burst of colour, holds limitless fascination. It can’t help but draw a smile & it was this sense of simple enjoyment we wanted to capture in this new Collection of woven baby slings & carriers.

Classics Collection from Oscha Slings

The Classics Collection is a selection of Oscha favourite, original patterns woven in ideal colourways, all of which may be created time and again. This new Collection combines some of our older ‘in-stock’ items and features fitting, gorgeous additions to the range.

Most of the fabrics we weave are designed to be one-offs, available for a limited time, never to be woven again. However, we know that this doesn’t suit everyone which is why we like to have a broad range of our fabrics available to shop year-round: the Classics Collection.

This bespoke selection combines our unique patterns with apt colourways, for a Collection which means the best of Oscha will be available for you to visit time and time again.

Sketchbook: Introducing Briarwood

Our After Dark Collection continues with a gorgeous new Arts and Crafts inspired design: Briarwood. We looked to the Victorian masters of textile & interior design for the inspiration behind our newest pattern – delicate tendrils weave across the width of this wrap as little floral motifs and small birds form a stunning mirrored wrap.

Briarwood Night Garden, part of the After Dark Collection

The Arts and Crafts movement, popular in the Late Victorian and Early Edwardian periods, developed in Britain before spreading across Europe & the rest of the world. Famed for its focus on the natural world and folklore – the themes of the Arts & Crafts movement seem to sit perfectly within our After Dark Collection.

A focus on hand production, quality materials and functionality, were at the heart of this movement. The artists believed that the function of the decorated object should first be perfected before turning to the design – a perfect source of inspiration, then, for our woven wraps!

Textile and wallpaper designer William Morris was an inspiration for Oscha designer, Evonne. Morris’ focus on the natural world, with twisting, turning vines and leaves interspersed with British wildlife formed the central concept for our fluid design.

Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort – John Ruskin

Briarwood Night Garden

Featuring gorgeous intertwining vines which are scattered with little blossoms & sweet birds, Briarwood Night Garden is woven in a hybrid weave. Our navy warp forming the backdrop for shimmery golden hemp & bright emerald Britspun Supima cotton.

Strong and supportive this stunning wrap will need a little love to break in fully, before becoming super soft and mouldable.

The After Dark Collection continues over the next few weeks and into the new year so look out on Facebook for updates on new colourways & designs.

A/W 2017: The After Dark Collection

We take a stroll through a moonlit garden seeking inspiration for our newest Collection: After Dark. Bathed in an ethereal glow, the garden takes on a supernatural calm once the sun goes down. With rich, warm colours, a few pops of brilliant brightness and a focus on the natural world, this Collection promises to be gorgeously varied with designs & colours to suit all tastes.

The After Dark Collection

The After Dark Collection will be with us from late October 2017 all the way through to early January 2018. Running through two distinct seasons this Collection takes its cues from autumnal warmth as well as the comforting chill of deep winter. Harnessing warm oranges, rich navy, cool purple and strong greens, the After Dark Collection is wonderfully diverse in its hues while maintaining the essential warmth we all crave at the changing of the seasons.
