Commissioning a Pre-order

We are asked all the time “How do I get my dream wrap made?” One of the fun parts of the job here at Oscha is collaborating with groups from around the world who want to commission a customised order. We love the creativity and new ideas our amazing pre-order groups bring, and how they enter into the joy of innovating alongside us.
Read our FAQ below and then its time to get designing!

I’m interested in commissioning a custom order, how do I go about it?

First, you need to have a Facebook group of at least 700 members who are interested too. Maybe you’re already chatting to them about the Oscha’s they love and the colourways, patterns and products that excite them. Then you’ll need to send us an email so we can send you more information & an application form where you can tell us about your group’s ideas.

Travelling with Kids: Which wrap to use in the heat?

“What are the best slings for the heat?” – This is a question we get asked all the time as the weather begins to warm up and people start to begin travelling to warmer climates than they are used to!
Comfy carrying in the summer heat comes down to three choices: type of carrier, the fabric and the type of carry you use.  Read on for our guide to choosing the right Oscha Sling for you & your little one this summer.
Choosing a carrier

Baby wraps and ring slings are popular choices for summertime carrying as they offer complete adjustability, allowing you and your little one to be comfortable together in the heat. Our Cairis Carrier is also a good option for summer carrying as the unique, lightweight design allows for natural airflow and all the comfort for a traditional woven sling.

A Father’s Heartbeat

Skin to skin carrying is one of the best gifts a baby can be given. Skin to skin contact helps them regulate their temperature, heart rate and breathing rates[1]. It produces oxytocin in both the caregiver and the baby calming both of them, and the beauty of skin to skin is that Dads can do it too[2]. This is not only fabulous for bonding, but also for occasions where mum may need further support or medical treatment.

Skin to skin from a father is so reassuring – whilst they may have only met moments ago, the warm embrace, the sound of his heart beating close and his familiar voice, reassures the baby that right here – they’re safe, they’re protected, it’s a beautiful home from home.

Scottish Baby Boxes: How to use my new baby wrap?

We were so delighted when we heard the announcement that the Scottish Government were going to introduce baby boxes for all babies born in Scotland, based on a Finnish Project that’s been running since 1938. I remember researching the Finnish boxes[1] when I was pregnant with my children, thinking they were such a great idea and wishing we had similar here – and now we do!

The boxes contain over 40 different items that the government considers essential for new babies and for parents, and the box itself can be used with the mattress and sheets inside it to become a safe clean sleeping area for the baby.

Whilst it’s a wonderful gesture to receive new items for your baby – the reason for the box and gifts goes much deeper than a simple gesture, as the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said “It’s a simple idea with a proven record in tackling deprivation, improving health and supporting parents”[2] All babies will now have a guaranteed safe sleeping area, clean clothes and basic essentials.

Imagine then the joy at Oscha HQ when we discovered that a baby carrier was going to be included too.

The summer is fast approaching and our thoughts are turning to family holidays – whether you’re travelling abroad or staycation-ing, heading off to seek the sun or venturing somewhere cooler, the question of which carrier to take is always at the forefront of our minds! We have gathered together some tips from the team here at Oscha to help you decide what to take.

Slings are a great option for travelling families, making it easy to navigate busy airports & unfamiliar streets while making sure you see all the sights along with your little ones. With buggies a pain to take on trains and planes and not allowed at all at some attractions, a sling can be great for families who want to travel with their kids.
Wraps, ring slings and carriers all have their benefits, each can be more suited to certain types of activities, trips & climates: here is a run down of the pros and cons of each carrier type to help you choose which Oscha to pack for your holidays …

What is a Sling Library?

Babywearing is a practice that flourishes in the context of the real life social meet up. With most babywearing retailers operating online, and with the fabric feel and construction such an important element in considering a purchase, opportunities to touch and try out different fabric blends in one space are truly valued. The opportunity to try a variety of styles of carrier, with support from experienced or professional babywearers, allows the chance to explore and to practice with guidance and support. Of course there is also the added benefit of being in the company of other people who feel as passionately about carrying as you do!

Wool – The Wonder Yarn

This month we focus on wool in our ongoing series of yarn blogs. We’ll join Vicki as she chases the sheep out of her garden, whilst paying homage to these amazing animals and investigating the wonderful baby wrapping properties of wool.
Sheep on the Wander

I’m having a wee bit of a problem with wild life in my garden; for a change it’s not rabbits eating my petunias, nor crows dive bombing the windows – the sheep have broken through from the neighbouring field and they think my shrubs are delicious. To be honest it’s surprising we haven’t had a visit sooner, for apparently Scotland has more sheep than people living upon our fair land.

Why Good Writing about Babywearing Matters

We take a look at Dr Rosie Knowles’ Why Babywearing Matters, Pinter & Martin, 2016.

With interest in babywearing increasing at a significant rate over the past decade, and recent growth of academic studies into the benefits of carrying your child, Rosie Knowles has produced a timely and accessible summary pulling together relevant information about the benefits of this practice that will appeal to both newcomers and long-time carriers.

Rosie Knowles Oscha

Rosie (a GP and Babywearing Consultant who runs her own Sling Library and shop) is well known and highly regarded within the babywearing world, and for good reason – her work promoting carrying not only in her hometown Sheffield (known as ‘Sling City’), but more widely in the UK and beyond, has undoubtedly contributed to a better understanding of babywearing benefits. She is passionate, knowledgeable, dedicated and motivated – any discussion with her on this topic is immediately engaging and heartfelt.

Wovens from Middle-Earth: The Tales of Tolkien Woven by Oscha Slings

We are proud to present The Middle-Earth Collection, the official collection of baby wraps and ring slings inspired by the world of J.R.R Tolkien.

This collection is the result of a long-held desire here at Oscha to create a collection inspired by the world set out in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Drawing inspiration from the rich tales in the works of Tolkien, and with exclusive rights from Middle-earth Enterprises, we have created a series of gorgeous designs steeped in a mythology that has enthralled generations of children and adults.

With designs reflecting every detail of this world, from the geography of Middle-earth to individual characters, this Collection spans the breadth of this immersive tale.

We feel that the carefully crafted creation of this world naturally complements Oscha’s unique, timeless aesthetic. A shared dedication to creating a considered piece of art, along with a devotion to the minutiae of this folklore has allowed us to bring Middle-earth to life in an authentic and tasteful way: creating truly wearable art for our fans.
